SARSEF Awarded Bayer Fund Grant

TUCSON, Ariz. (Oct. 10, 2019) – The Bayer Fund has awarded six $10,000 grants to Tucson area organizations supporting Food & Nutrition, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Education or Community Development.

“We commend these organizations for their outreach to students,” said Matt Lingard, site lead for Bayer’s Marana Greenhouse. “These grants are a part of our ongoing mission to make meaningful investments in the communities where Bayer employees live and work.”

The Bayer Fund grant recipients listed below are recognized for their track record of working with youth as well as their ongoing commitment to student mentoring and instruction in their communities:

  • Two projects with the Marana Unified School District
    • STEMAZing Teacher Leader Program
    • Marana High School Greenhouse
  • Junior Achievement of Arizona’s JA in a Day financial literacy brought to Marana Unified School District’s Roadrunner Elementary School students
  • SARSEF (Southern Arizona Research, Science and Engineering Foundation) program to bring STEM oriented education to K-12 students
  • Arizona Youth Partnership to fund Food for Thought, a program providing snacks and nutritional support during the group’s classes.
  • University of Arizona’s College of Engineering for Summer Engineering Outreach, a program for high school students and teachers

In addition to financial support, the Bayer Marana team is dedicated to volunteering and being hands on whenever possible. Earlier this month, team members helped repair the greenhouse at Marana High School alongside FFA (Future Farmers of America) and agriculture students. Bayer engineers and scientists will also participate in SARSEF’s annual Science Fair in the spring.

Marana High School students volunteer with Bayer Marana Greenhouse staff to repair the school’s greenhouse.

The Bayer Fund, which is a philanthropic arm of Bayer, provided more than $16 million in grants to organizations across the United States in 2018 that focused on Food & Nutrition, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Education or Community Development.

Within the region where the Bayer Marana Greenhouse is located, more than $7 million in Bayer Fund grants have been awarded during the past five years to local organizations. Upon completion, the Bayer Marana Greenhouse will grow corn for seed production.
