Racing the Sun Specialist (Part-Time) 

Reports to: Program Manager 
Status: Part-Time, Hourly 

Job Summary  

With SARSEF, every Arizona student has the opportunity to discover their potential as a scientist or engineer solving problems big and small. SARSEF uses a comprehensive programming model that supports students, teachers, and families so that students can think critically and solve problems through science and engineering. We couldn’t be successful without an impactful Racing the Sun program. 

Racing the Sun is an exciting engineering program that challenges high school students to design, build, and race solar-powered go-karts. It is open to all Arizona high school students. 

Working with teachers and mentors, students spend nine months preparing for Race Day. Along the way, they apply physics, engineering, and energy. They solve real-world problems, using mathematical, analytical, and critical thinking skills. Students work in teams and collaborate on ideas. They are challenged to translate their ideas into a working prototype, and along the way, they build leadership skills. 

As SARSEF’s part-time Racing the Sun Specialist, you will assist with the day-to-day needs of the program, ensuring teams have the information they need to be successful. 

The successful candidate should have strong organizational and communication skills to take ownership of and initiative in their work. They should also have a passion for high school students practicing engineering skills and exploring opportunities in the field. The ability to collaborate with others is a must. 

Job Responsibilities Include 

  • Communicate directly with teams and mentors to ensure they have a successful and fulfilling Racing the Sun season 
  • Assist with Racing the Sun events and progress checks
  • Assist in the recruitment of Racing the Sun volunteers and mentors 
  • Work collaboratively with Director of Events and Volunteers to ensure volunteer and mentor website postings are accurate and distributed 
  • Order Racing the Sun supplies, including kart parts 
  • Maintain and update documents as appropriate 
  • Attend and take notes at Racing the Sun Advisory Board meetings 
  • Give information to Director of Marketing and Communications in order to create impactful marketing materials 
  • Assist in distributing marketing and program-specific materials 
  • Travel to schools to ensure teams are doing well, mileage paid at the IRS standard rate

Must Maintain Basic Requirements 

  • Must pass a Pima County fingerprint clearance  
  • Reliable transportation is required in order to travel to schools on a regular basis 
  • Minimum Arizona auto insurance liability required  


The successful candidate will be paid $20.00 an hour, expected to average 20 hours per week. This is a year-round position.
