SARSEF is happy to share that Dr. Christopher Cabello has joined our board! Dr. Cabello is the Interim Dean of Sciences and a Chemistry Faculty at Pima Community College. Read more about Dr. Cabello’s interest and dedication to STEM education and about what interests him in science and engineering.
What brought you to SARSEF?
“I was drawn to SARSEF for its strong commitment to expanding access to the scientific process and engagement activities for students across Southern Arizona, and for its interest in broadening its reach in Arizona. In my role as Acting Dean of Sciences at Pima Community College (PCC), I have seen firsthand how early exposure to scientific inquiry can shape a student’s academic pathway. I have enjoyed observing students explore their interests during summer camps and the AZ Stem Adventure, both held on PCC’s Northwest Campus.”
What are you interested in regarding STEM?
“My interests in STEM now center on access to hands-on learning, student engagement, and career readiness for current and future PCC students. I am particularly interested in creating opportunities for authentic research experiences, developing critical thinking, and fostering a sense of belonging in STEM. Early in my career, I became engaged in drug discovery and development research, facilitated by a group of very strong, motivating mentors. I hope that in my current role at PCC and as a Board member I can make a similar impact on students as they navigate their educational journey.”
If you could create your own SARSEF program or modify an existing one, what would it be and why?
“I think that it is important to start engaging with students at an early age. This is why I find the AZ STEM Adventure to be one of my favorite programs offered by SARSEF in the community. I would love to help create a new program where the entire family can engage in science together, reinforcing the importance of questioning your surroundings and exploring.”
Who is a scientist or engineer that you admire?
“Marie Curie has been a role model for her contributions in science amid significant challenges. That said, I also highly admire all my past students who have completed rigorous academic programs to become STEM professionals. I always enjoy receiving updates from them as they make progress in their careers and receive accolades.”
Why do you care about STEM education?
“Questioning your surroundings and devising ways to test your ideas are fundamental skills that are essential to all aspects of our lives. STEM education gives us the tools to test these ideas methodically, no matter how big or small the question. In addition, access to STEM education helps us build a strong workforce of innovative thinkers to improve our communities.”
Finish this sentence: “SARSEF is…”
