SARSEF is proud to introduce Yaritza Durazo as a new board member. Yaritza is an Undergraduate Student of Physiology at University of Arizona and Medical Scribe at Northwest Urology. Read more to learn about Yaritza’s history as a SARSEF alumni, and why science and engineering education are important to her.
What brought you to SARSEF?
“In 7th grade, I won first place for my project at the fair and a volunteer told my parents more about science and the accomplishment of my award. When my teacher found out, she informed my parents that I should take honors science classes. This was a catalyst to my journey in science. In high school, I participated in STAR lab where I worked on a project on the three body problem. Alongside my studies, I learned to think critically and remain curious. SARSEF provided me with resources to be the successful scientist I am today.”
What are you interested in regarding science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM)?
“I am interested in everything. Right now, I am keeping up with the Artemis 2 mission. Other than the cool science news I hear, I am interested in STEM outreach and how we could improve our goal of reaching more students in Southern Arizona who may lack resources to stay curious.”
If you could create your own SARSEF program or modify an existing one, what would it be and why?
“I would create a SARSEF program that delves more into medicine. I am passionate about healthcare so combining STEM and medicine would be perfect for me!”
Who is a scientist or engineer that you admire?
“The scientists I admire are the students I see at fairs, programs, and events throughout Southern Arizona. I find myself inspired by their questions and curiosities. When I grow up, I hope I can have even half as many good questions as they bring to the table.”
Why do you care about STEM education?
“STEM itself keeps me inspired. STEM education is the ultimate tool for social mobility and community empowerment. I care about it because I believe that every student, regardless of their background, deserves the chance to see themselves as a problem-solver.”
Finish this sentence: “SARSEF is…”
“SARSEF is community.”
