Girls on Outdoor Adventure for Leadership and Science (GALS) is a free science program for high school girls in Arizona that integrates outdoor education with place-based science learning. We bring young women into the backcountry to increase science proficiency by engaging participants as scientists.
During a week-long camping trip in the Chiricahua Mountains, participants will engage with the natural world, participate in scientific investigations, meet female scientists, hike, create botanical art, conduct soil surveys, and develop self-reliance and leadership skills. The GALS experience extends beyond the wilderness with each cohort receiving support through friendships and continued mentorship from leaders throughout the school year.

The legacy of GALS
Initiated in 2016 at Duke University, GALS provides enhanced science and leadership learning opportunities for students in an outdoor setting (sciencegals.org). Each program focuses on local ecology and regional environmental management issues. GALS has longterm impact, working to empower the next generation of female scientists!
“The trip was so amazing. It exceeded my expectations in every way possible. I got to bond and have fun with so many amazing people. I also got to learn about so much incredible stuff. The leaders were so cool, so, so smart and interesting. I got to make really sweet friendships and experiences Ill forever be grateful for.”

“You will meet some of the most fun and interesting people on this trip. You will be challenged and tested in many ways that may be a bit uncomfortable but will prove to be well worth the effort. GALS is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that will give you lifelong memories. Its the moist fun you will ever have camping and you’ll have such fun times with everyone there. Truly lucky to be part of GALS.”
-Lauren“Reflecting on my time at the GALS program, I have realized all the amazing experiences and memories I made. The girls I met were all so sweet and the leaders were the kindest and most gentle people ever. I am grateful for the kindness they have shown me and the skills they have taught me. I would have never expected to have learned the things I did! I appreciate the GALS program for giving me a great opportunity to meet new people and come out of my comfort zone.”
