Citizen Scientists – We Need You To Collect Data!

Citizen scientists we need you! Yes, you!
Anyone, any age, can help a scientist by collecting data!

The What Do You Wonder: A Community of Young Scientists virtual program was created by SARSEF in response to our Arizona students’ curiosity about the world around them. We are now in session two of the program and need your help!

Our goal is to meet students where they are providing them opportunities to observe, wonder and research while flexing their critical thinking and problem solving muscles. SARSEF is working alongside young scientists (PreK-12th grade) in our community, as they create research questions and determine data collection methods.

You can be a Citizen Scientist and a valuable part of our
Young Scientist’s
journey by helping them to collect data!

Data Collection: May 8th – May 17th, 2020
Results Posted on the SARSEF Website after May 21st, 2020

Here are five ways to contribute to the young scientists in
SARSEF’s What Do You Wonder Program
To get started: download, print or fill out the Data Sheets to record your data.
Anyone can participate in one or all of the research projects!
After three days summarize you data
(on the data collection sheet or provided  data summary sheet)
and submit your results to the Data Submission Form

1.) Bird Watchers PreK-2nd Grade (Ages 3 – 6)

How does the time of day affect the kinds and number of birds that I see?
To get started, download, print or fill out the Data Sheet for three days.
There is also a Field Guide to help identify common birds. Once you have recorded your data, complete the Data Submission Form.

2.)  Smart Birds PreK-2nd Grade (Ages 5-8)

How does the temperature influence the activities of birds that I see?
To get started, download, print or electronically fill out the Data Sheet for three days and summarize you data on the Summary Sheet.

There is also a Field Guide available to help identify common birds.

3.)  Nature Watchers 3-5 Grade (Ages 8-11)

How does the weather and temperature affect the plants and animals in my neighborhood?

To get started, download, print or electronically fill out the Animal Data Sheet and Plant Data Sheet for three days and summarize your findings on the Data Summation Sheet.

There is also a research overview available that outlines the project and how to collect the data via the quadrant process.
Once you have recorded your data, complete the Data Submission Form.

4.)  The Wildlife Trackers 6-8 Grade (Ages 11-14)

How does habitat (urban vs rural/desert vs suburban) affect the flight response distance of animals?

To get started, download, print or electronically fill out Data Sheet for three days.

Once you have recorded your data, download and complete the Data Submission Form and email to margaret@sarsef.org

5.) The Masked Turkey High School Scientists 9-12 Grade (Ages 12-18)

Have people in your community changed their behavior in response to COVID 19?
To get started, download, print or electronically fill out the Data Sheet for three days.
